The television chef takes her namesake from a Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner movie. The Barefoot Contessa. We never quite knew what it meant, but it always sounded right for Ina Garten 's popular Food Network show.

So why did Ina Garten settle on this moniker for her television show and line of cookbooks? Garten had no experience in the food industry when she purchased her store, but she did have great taste, always.

And at the time, Garten had no idea the trajectory her culinary career would take. She purchased Barefoot Contessa with no experience in cooking, business ownership, or food industry experience. All she had was a dream and, luckily enough, an extraordinary amount of talent. At that point, with nothing to do, I built myself an office over the store and tried my hand at writing a cookbook. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook came out in and turned out to be the most exciting thing I've ever done professionally.

Happily, that first cookbook was a surprise best-seller. By , I had published two more cookbooks and started filming a show for Food Network, also called Barefoot Contessa.
