My dad would always do this when I was growing up while watching the Steelers play. I understand the objection, as well as the opposing side to this divisive issue.
I commonly refer to Penn State athletics in the first person plural tense. There is one notable exception to this rule, I believe. One could say we when referring to the Packers. The Packers sell ownership of their team as stock, so one could kind of say we when referring to the Packers.
The whole point of saying we is not to signify that they helped the team, but rather, to identify with fellow supporters of the team to show unity behind the team. While sports teams themselves encouraging the usage of "we" and of course the 1st amendment guarantee your "right" to say "we", It just looks ridiculous if you do so.
Are you on the roster? Are you the coach? Are you even on the staff, Or played in their youth team as a kid? Then you are not part of the team. You should feel happy if they win as your money and passion have contributed to that, But your foot never touched the ball on behalf of the team so don't act as if you would be recognised if you were to walk in and ask to hold the trophy.
Would you say we when talking about a band you enjoy or a company you don't work for? The players are employees of the team. You are not part of the organization and have no role within the organization.
You have no impact on the outcome of the games. The players would not consider you as part of the team but for some reason you think you play a role for the team. It sounds pathetic to those of us who don't follow sports. I believe in free speech so i think that you CAN say whatever you want including we , BUT, If you are not part of the team sorry m8s you probably shouldn't say we.
Not really a deb8. Move on. Maybe join a team to earn the right to say we. You have no affiliation with the team. If you are a member of the team, Staff or if you attend the school that the team belongs to, Then ok.
Otherwise, You sound idiotic. If it is a school team and you are alumni, Then this is still ok, But barely so. They produce a product sports entertainment and you consume the product by buying merchandise and game tickets.
Would you say "we" if any other brand that you love Apple, For example did or produced something you like? Unless you are playing, You are not a part of the team. You can support a team, But you are not part of it. Just please. I need extra words, So I am going to say this. You are not a player, Why are you saying we, You stupid or something.
This following sentence is just written here to get to the words needed that the counter is claiming i need to write, Why? I don't know. But here i go i guess, 3, 2, 1, 0,. Stupid idiots don't play on the team. They're not practicing with the team. These arm chair athletes don't do anything. They sound like uneducated neandrathals ot trump supporters.
Now think of it after a decade. A year of your life — a year out of your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, what have you — spent following the ups and downs of a sports team. This collection of 25 players, the manager that decides how best to deploy them, the general manager who builds the team, and the person who spends a fifth of his or her waking life on all of them. They all need a reliever. For you, a dude goes away to Tommy John Land and then reappears as a plot twist in Season 2.
Film nerds, Deadheads, baseball card collectors, Pokemon Go enthusiasts I go back and forth on this. What is sports without fan participation? Why not let them be a part of this and use the royal we? Just catch yourself and make a mental note not to do it next time.
We can all get through this together.
